I encountered grand strategy games a few years back with Axis @ Allies and Empires of the Middle Ages so when I heard of Europa Universalis IV I wanted to check out this grand strategy game myself. I downloaded a demo version of Europa Universalis IV and as soon as the game’s interface opened up, I knew that this was not a straightforward, easy to play game of epic proportions.

The game’s main menu options open up below and you can choose whether to go single player or play with other Europa Universalis players in multiplayer mode. There are also buttons for tutorial games below as well as option settings and credits as well. I’m having a bit of difficulty connecting to multiplayer and I’m really not sure why this is so. In the tutorials, you can choose basic controls and game play as well as advanced gameplay. The actual beginner campaign would be for users to control Spain. Other countries can be controlled as well, but it is noteworthy to remember that Europa Universalis IV hinges on the premise that European countries are more advanced in more ways than one compared with non-European countries at that time. This means that if you select a non-European country to control, you will surely be lagging behind in technology and resources later on in the game than if you were to choose a European nation.

As the player, you’ll have access to your selected nation’s resources, including military might. So then you’ll be able to control ships and boats and trade routes, exploring your nearby country neighbors and basically your objective would be to expand your empire. Europa Universalis is a complicated game that you really need to be immersed in before you can start to enjoy.

  • Very educational as it covers key events in the rise and fall of actual kingdoms and nations
  • Complex gameplay will engage users who are used to grand strategy games

  • Will surely be a bit overwhelming for novice grand strategists

For what are you going to use the program?
  • Mostly for fun educational purpose.Unlike most of the current "Historical Gaming Experiences",Europa Universalis IV has a much more diverse background to be immerse.

  • Gaming- As a fan of PC strategy games such as the Total War and Civilisation franchise, I thought I should give this game a try as well, yeah

  • my own use for fun and pleasure. i like grand strategy games and especialy those that refare to the medieval time. so thanks for allowing me to play

  • conquering everything with this game downloading mods and do funny things playing a chirstian ottoman empire muslim muscovy napoleonic wars will be amazing

  • I am going to show it to my children so they can learn history and geography in a fun game! This game is also the perfect oppurtinity for me to reinforce my geographical basis.

What similar programs have you used?
  • I generally like to call myself a quasi-fan of games like this, strategy games, that require more mental effort than the menial shootemupgames

  • I have used many programmes like this, the first one being europa universals III, but also civilization V, Total war, etc. and games like caesar III or Paraoh's

  • I havent used any programs like this ever in my life. I think this is pretty cool though because my friend has it and I dont have steam so thanks bro.

  • Victoria II which is a game similar to Europa Universal IV and played as my favorite country in all AI and gamer games, Spain or you could call late Castile

  • i have used empire total war that allowed me to move for more stretigy based games thats why i am now about to go for europa univarsalis 4 .

What do you like most about this program?
  • I like this program because you can just get good games for free with no viruses or slow downloads and its always available.I cant wait to play Europa Univeralis Four.

  • France, it may be slightly overpowered, but there is nothing I enjoy more than pummeling some OPMs into the dust with those sweet ideas and morale

  • I like the realism of the game being that it covers a period of time in European history where politics, trade and war were becoming more evolved and civilized.

  • Great depth compared to other games in the genre. The fact that it is individual countries rather than empire (as Civ) is particularly appealing

  • Playing for personal enjoyment. I'm not using this to make money by gambling, but I'm interested in players against others. Please Understand

Europa Universalis IV is a strategy building PC game that is popular among players that are looking for a deeper tactical experience. This title is not like the usual ones of the genre, this is more paused, more like a virtual board game that you can play with your friends when you want to conquer them. Unlike RTS genre, this Europa Universalis IV is based on politics, diplomacy and war. Nevertheless, it is not only a war game since you are free to become powerful without slaughtering other countries.

This new member of the saga, Europa Universalis IV, has changed its interface in order to be adapted for a more general public. However, the menus and mechanics are kept difficult as always, with lots of options available and different strategies to carry out. If the user feels that the gameplay is slow, there is an option to increase its speed.

How to play

Once you download and install this PC title, you can start forging your own story. You will have to make your own decisions: what kind of government you have, the structure of your society, etc. Besides, you will have to bring out your diplomatic skills with coalitions, threats or fleet basing fights. So choose your strategy wisely.

One of the main attractive aspects of this PC videogame is the management of your own country. Your population can even rebel against you if you don’t treat them well, so you have to keep the balance to accomplish your objectives without damaging your own people. There are different kind of armies available for each faction depending on the troops available. Nevertheless, you can choose other kind of strategy giving your army just a defensive sense and making yourself strong in other aspects such as commerce and diplomacy.

Europa Universalis IV is a title for patient people. Don’t expect huge wars where two lords send their armies to death for their supremacy. Instead, expect a quiet, realistic empire. Of course, there will be war, but before you need a reason, and then you need to sign a statement of war. Later, you start changing the way you manage your country so you can invest in weapons and defense, then you gather your army, then you go to war. Every aspect of diplomacy is realistic. This may be a blessing for users who like extreme accuracy in this kind of games; others may think this title is just too slow.
